The City Planner's Diagonal Path: On Accommodating Emergent Information Flow

There’s a famous story in urban design about a university campus. After the architects had laid out the pristine, geometric pathways between buildings, they waited to pave them. They watched instead where the students and faculty, following their own daily logic of urgency and convenience, actually wore desire paths into the grass. Only then did they pave over these emergent, often diagonal, routes. The planned grid was orderly, but the worn paths represented a more truthful, organic map of need.

Our websites, especially those large, institutional ones we manage, are often built like that initial campus plan. We design the information architecture with a top-down logic: a main navigation bar, a hierarchy of categories, a sitemap that looks beautiful in a diagram. We establish the official routes for our visitors. But over time, the content that matters most shifts. A support article for a legacy feature becomes obsolete, while a forum post from a user becomes the de facto guide for a new problem. A once-minor service page is now the primary entry point for half our traffic. The grass between the paved paths gets worn down.

Content freshness, in this light, isn't just about updating publish dates or swapping out old statistics. It’s about recognizing and then formalizing these desire paths. It’s the work of a city planner, not a cartographer. The cartographer’s job is to record the landscape as it is; the planner’s job is to shape it for better living. Our task is to observe the clickstreams, analyze the search queries landing on obscure pages, and note the comments asking for clarification on what we thought was a secondary point. These are the footprints in the digital grass, showing us where people actually want to go.

This requires a shift from a mindset of maintenance to one of urban stewardship. We aren’t simply dusting shelves laid out by a long-departed architect. We are observing the flow of information and asking: does our current structure facilitate it, or force a frustrating detour? The most elegant solution isn’t always to force users back onto the paved path with a redirect or a stern ‘you are here’ indicator. Sometimes, it’s to tear up the asphalt and lay a new, diagonal path right where the need has demonstrated itself.

From Observation to Infrastructure

This approach turns change detection from a chore into a continuous, low-grade discovery process. Analytics become our aerial photograph of the campus, showing the faded trails. User feedback and search console data are the on-the-ground reports from citizens complaining about a muddy, well-trodden shortcut. The act of updating a page, then, is the moment we decide to install proper lighting and a durable surface on that shortcut, transforming it from an unofficial hack into a legitimate, dignified part of the cityscape.

The beautiful paradox is that by embracing this organic, bottom-up wear, we create a more intentionally coherent whole. A site that rigidly enforces its original blueprint becomes increasingly alienating, a museum of old intentions. A site that learns from its users’ behavior, that paves their desire paths, becomes more intuitive, more useful, and ultimately, more alive. It acknowledges that a website is not a static monument, but a living, breathing public space, shaped as much by its inhabitants as by its architects.
