The Horologist's Winter Solstice: On the Annual Re-Winding of the Page
There is a particular quiet that falls over the world in the week between the solstice and the new year. The frantic energy of December dissipates, leaving behind a hushed, reflective stillness. It’s in this liminal space that I find myself drawn not forward, but back—not to plan new content, but to tend to the old. This is the time for the annual re-winding.
I think of it in terms of an old clock, a grand mechanical thing that needs a deliberate, physical turn of a key to keep its pendulum swinging for another year. Our pages are like that. They don’t run on perpetual motion. Left unattended, their mechanisms slow, their information grows stale, and their connection to the present moment weakens until they become beautiful, useless artifacts. The annual review is the key; the solstice is the time to turn it.
This isn’t the frantic, daily pruning of the gardener or the anxious, constant vigilance of the signal keeper. This is a slower, more ceremonial practice. It’s a deliberate walk through the archives of one’s own making. I open pages I haven’t seen in eleven months. I read them not as their author, but as a visitor might. Does the advice still hold? Does the reference to ‘last year’s event’ now point to something seven years past? Has the world shifted in a way that makes a once-solid argument feel brittle and thin?
There’s a humility in this exercise. It’s a confrontation with your past self, with the assumptions you no longer hold and the enthusiasms that have since cooled. You find sentences that once felt so sharp now blunted by time. You find predictions that never came to pass. This isn’t a failure; it’s a record of a moment, and our job as stewards is not to erase that record, but to annotate it. To add a quiet “[As of 2023]” or a brief “Editor’s Note” that bridges the gap between then and now. It’s not about hiding the passage of time, but about acknowledging it with grace.
This annual re-winding is an act of respect—for the reader who stumbles upon the page seeking truth, and for the work itself. It’s a promise that what we put into the world, we will care for. As the old year closes and the new one hangs full of potential, this ritual grounds me. It’s the quiet, satisfying click of the mechanism being set right, ensuring that when the pendulum swings forward into January, every page, every word, is keeping accurate time.
